CANVAS WORK Sometimes called Needlepoint, or Tapestry. Unlike tapestry, which is woven, this is stitched with a blunt needle with a large hole, as it is generally worked in wool. It is used for household items like cushions, kneelers, chair and stool-seats, because it is quite strong for everyday use. I started with a sampler, learning the stitches as I went along. I made it into a picture frame, and it can be seen with picture of a poppy, on the right of this page. The next thing I tried was a needle case. I used different stitches, and worked two pictures depicting a hare and a tortoise on each side. The knott garden, the 3rd thumbnail in the right panel, was a project worked at one of the Embroiderers Guild weekends. Different weights of canvas were used and dyed, then laid on top of each other, to create the effect. They were stiffened and were able to be cut to shape. The piece was professionally framed, with the mounts cut in the same shape to accentuate the design. The two cushions ‘Paradise Bird’ and ‘Victorian Bird’ from the Royal School of Needlework are from a W.I book entitled ‘Designer Needlepoint’ They are stitched in continental tent stitch. I have stitched many kneelers, for our local church. St Peters. There are many more pictures in the Gallery. They are made from kits available from Jacksons of Hebden Bridge. These are hand painted on the canvas and stitched in cross stitch. They are very accurately painted, and are particularly suitable for beginners to work. They have a catalogue and also sell cushions, one of which is shown here, with rugs and pictures. The fish shown is an experimental piece of Canvas work, which was worked at a Embroiderers Guild weekend, under the tuterlage of Wendy Dolan. The Cat Rug is made from a ready cut kit. |
