TEMPORARY TEXT. Courtesy of Wye Needlecraft of Bakewell Crewel work is an ancient form of embroidery using soft two-ply crewel wool to create a slightly raised feature on a linen twill fabric background. This technique uses various shades within a colour normally greens, blues, browns, and reds worked with a design based on nature, traditionally based on the tree of life. Crewelwork incorporates a variety of beautiful stitches including satin stitch, French knots, stem stitch, etc. Crewelwork is ideal for all skill-levels try it! The Bird of Paradise embodies all the techniques of Crewel Work but uses different threads i.e. DMC and Gold. This is my contribution to a wall hanging in memory of Hilary who was part of our Thursday stitching group and sadly died of cancer last year. The Hanging will be made up of six panels stitched by different members of the group. The finished wall hanging will probably go to Hillary's church in Whitstable Kent, UK.
